The ability to fork is a strength of Open Source for sure. But forking on a whim does not serve the greater good. The power of Open Source is to collaborate on creating better software. This is the core thesis of the Open Source movement.

Forcing people to fork you to achieve basic interoperability is very destructive. As I have seen in other comments, I do not a project to do the work to serve other interests. But saying that it is totally ok behaviour for an Open Source project to be hostile to those efforts is not the answer. At least, not in my view.
