Does Google Message underlie other Android SMS apps?

Or do those of us who install alternatives avoid passing through it at all? Disabling audio attachments, if possible, sounds like a smart strategy. It's sad what a large fraction of vulnerabilities are due to obscure features that few users want.

The AOSP SMS app (used in some form by all "alternative" Androids) is separate, and to my knowledge does not automatically decode audio attachments (since it doesn't perform any audio transcription).
