Maybe a hint?

I don't follow such versions but I didn't remember having ever noticed that there was anything newer than gtk2 in dependencies, even though I'm now seeing them on my system. But if gtk3 was released in 2011 and Gimp itself, where all of this originated from, only adopted it 14 years later, while gtk4 had been available for 5 years already, surely this is a hint that something there probably doesn't perfectly match users' expectations, whether it's related to massive code changes, a different architecture or anything. So actually the problem might be the newer versions themselves if programs don't adopt them for that long.
