You are likely correct, the snake oil industry selling backports as some sort of panacea that provides new security fixes and sometimes even features without risk of new bugs despite being essentially just badly tested forks by people who have very little experience with the code base (because they are responsible for dozens or hundreds of packages) is just too entrenched at this point.
