LWN's Mastodon migration

The LWN.net fediverse (Mastodon) feed has moved; we are now known as @LWN@lwn.net. The migration magic has shifted many of our followers over automatically but, if you follow that stream, you might want to make sure that you have shifted to the new source.

Add overview stub to posts

I follow LWN via RSS; it would be a nice feature if the Mastodon posts included the one/two sentence article overview in them like the RSS feed. $0.02 :-)

Reason for the move?

Was this, by any chance, related to recent issues with fosstodon, or was this just because you've been wanting to self-host anyway and have a canonical address you own?

It was both, honestly, along with one other: the Fosstodon site policy is against automated posting, which is what the bulk of our traffic is. They have pondered kicking us off in the past. We finally got around to honoring their policy and moving elsewhere, with current events as the kick that got things moving.

Is there a pending article or blurb about this?

We were not planning to write any articles. This post is a place to look for more information.

Looks like the current admins are stepping down:

It's also on Blueksy - but that bot appears to post less than the Mastodon bot.

Bluesky

Interesting ... we have not set up any Bluesky presence. If you're seeing a stream there, somebody else did it...

... huh. I don't believe we run an official Bluesky syndication. Someone has probably set up a replication of our Mastodon feed or our RSS feed. If people find the Bluesky feed useful, we can probably figure out how to get an official one working.

Bridgy Fed for Bluesky?

Looks like your Masto/Fediverse account gets a lot more updates than your Bluesky/atproto account. Any chance you might connect it to https://fed.brid.gy/ so more folks can follow along?

As noted in a few comments posted before yours, LWN does not have an official presence on Bluesky; whatever is there is being done by someone else.

Looking at the numbers, it looks like about half of subscribers have not (yet) migrated between instances, which is a bit disappointing. It may just be a matter of time, or it may be that we've set things up in a way that some Fediverse clients aren't handling well. I'll look into it.

Just a blunt guess, can it be that those followers are not active on Mastodon anymore (or haven't been active lately)?
