Opt IN data collection - why would it be illegal?

So long as the user is told about the UUID, and gives their *informed* consent, I can't see any problem under UK (and presumably EU) law.

Having read the article, though, it feels more "opt-out" and the uuid isn't mentioned - that would be a massive red flag under EU privacy laws...
