Simply put, it's a structured way to send electronic documents from one site to another. It was designed by mainframe types and commissioned by Dilbert's boss. It's little more than structured e-mail, but the mainframe mentality that surrounds much of it has made it outrageously expensive, inefficient, and generally controlled by a very small group of companies known as Value Added Networks (VANs).
