Usenix Report for Tuesday

Ahhh. New Orleans... The city where not only are you allowed to
be weird, it's the city motto. Monday and Tuesday were tutorial days,
so we've mostly been bumming around town. A reception was held
tonight with lots of food and more conversation.

One of the stories we heard tonight was about one of the Austrailian
User's Group meetings. After the meeting they usually go out for
Pizza, and one night as one of the guys was taking the money up
to pay, he said "Hey, guys! Take a look at this!" The Point
Of Sale system was rebooting and, ta dah, was booting Linux...

After the rececption, we attended the Systers BoF (Birds of a
Feather) session. Systers is a group for female system admins.
I noticed that many of the things they seemed to think of as
problems for them were to me issues as well. I think everyone
has to prove themselves to a new client/company, not that I
can honestly say that it's no worse for men than women.

Few folks I've recognised -- mostly from the Linux camp... But,
considering that Linux Expo was 2 weeks ago, and Linux Kongress
was last week, I suspect the Linux folks are Conferenced Out (tm).
Usenix is a good conference for Linux folks however because it
lets you see what groups in the Unix community as a whole are
doing.

The terminal room has around 30 PCs running OpenBSD, and another
10 hub connections for us laptop users. They've switched this year
to using DHCP to allocate ports, which after a few snags seems
to be going smoothly. For those who are having problems with DHCP,
the backup system is PCHCP... In this system, you can pick up a punch
card with your IP, gateway, and DNS information on it, and you return
it to the pool when you're done...

Ahh, it's nice sitting here listening to the pitter-patter of little
hackers at the keyboards...

More soon...

Sean
