Hi
I am pleased to anounce the third release of MAT (Monitoring and Administration
Tool). This is version 0.16. The package is available from:
sunsite.unc.edu in /pub/Linux/system/admin/frontends
The file is called: mat-0.16.tar.gz and is 846K
MAT is a networked UNIX administration and monitoring tool for Linux,
SunOS, and Solaris machines. It simplifies
many of the day to day tasks of an system administrator. It allows you
to quickly and easily add, modify and delete the entries in many of the
common UNIX configuration files, such as:
passwd (1.)
hosts
groups
(v)fstab
resolv.conf
motd (or issue)
services
aliases
syslog.conf
exports (dfstab)
DNS records
NIS records
(1.) Changes to the passwd file are also applied to the users home
directory, including moving directory location.
You can easily inspect many of the parameters on a monitored host
including:
Routing table
Process list
Disk usage
Exports
All log files used by syslogd
(Lastlog is currently broken)
Job specific GUI's provide an interface to each of the configuration
files. From a single console you can administer all of your UNIX
machines, without having to telnet, rsh etc to that host. The MAT
GUI allows you to quickly select the host, configuration file and
entry you wish to modify with a few mouse clicks.
MAT was born out of the need to distribute the system administration
load to those who *really* need more to do. It allow you to distribute
the system administration tasks by giving authorized individuals the
ability to change some or all of the configuration, of your workstations
or remote machines.
The NIS tool allows you to manipulate most of the NIS databases.
Extensive checks are included in the NIS tool to prevent corruption
of the files. Allowences have been made for site specific
configurations such as quotas and accounting information by means of
external scripts which you can modify to suit your configuration.
The DNS tool allow you to quickly manage your DNS records, even
on multi-subnet, multi-domain networks.
MAT has three parts:
1. A GUI management console.
2. A MAT agent which processes commands on the remote host.
3. A monitoring daemon, for usage/trend analysis.
The management console runs on any operating system with Tcl/TK, and
the TCP/IP protocol stack installed, even Windows95. One console can
monitor and control every UNIX machine on your network.
The MAT agent resides on the host you wish to monitor or control. It
processes all the commands and queries from the MAT console. It is
invoked when MAT commands are sent to the host.
The monitoring daemon MATd, runs on every host you want to monitor.
It provides historical information about:
Disk usage
Logins
Network Connectivity
Host specific manditory processes eg nfsd, httpd, ypserv
Runque
CPU utilization
The MATd GUI allows you to define warning thresholds and warning scripts,
however these are not functional in this release. Several of the
monitoring scripts are written in Perl. Historical information from
MATd is maintained automatically by a housekeeping task, which trims the
logs to a predetermined length.
The package includes:
- The Tcl/TK management console
- The agent binaries for Linux, SunOS and Solaris
- The matd binaries for Linux, SunOS and Solaris
Licensing:
MAT is freeware for single computer networks i.e. the three MAT
components are run on the same machine, such as a home PC.
In all other cases it is shareware. You may evaluate it for a
period of 30 days free of charge. If you continue to use it
after the evaluation period, you must license it. Email
sblack@ee.ryerson.ca for more details.
Requirements:
- Tcl/TK installed on one host for the management console.
- Linux 2.0.x, SunOS 4.1.x, or Solaris.
- Perl is needed by the agent, and deamon for full functionallity.
Enjoy.....
Mark
