   The groups and user in question are from NIS.  Any ideas what is
   wrong?  Does anyone else see this? (This does work right on RH 5.0 for
   ix86 and RH 4.2 for the sparc.)

It's a bug in the GLIBC in UP-1.0.9.  For the impatient, feel free to
grab updates with the bug fixed from:
