Subject: GDB 4.17 is now available

------- Start of forwarded message -------
GDB, the GNU debugger, allows you to debug programs written in C, C++,
and other languages, by executing them in a controlled fashion, printing
their data, etc.

We are releasing version 4.17 of GDB. We released 4.16 two years ago,
and there are many changes and additions in 4.17.

- -rw-r--r-- 1 14910 23059 8972436 Apr 27 20:12 gdb-4.17.tar.gz

The md5sum checksum is

b7d40dc61f0691d5e2e6dd21b0408688 gdb-4.17.tar.gz

We've added host support for Alpha GNU/Linux, Unixware2, Irix 6.x, PPC
Solaris, SPARC GNU/Linux, Motorola 68k sysV68 R3V71 and x86 Solaris.
We've added target support for the ARC, Hitachi H8/300S, Matsushita
MN10200 and MN10300, MIPS NEC VR4100 and VR5000, MIPS Toshiba TX39,
Mitsubishi D10V and M32R/D, the Tsqware Sparclet, ARM Thumb (ARM7T),
MIPS16, and the NEC V850. There are also simulators included for many
of these chips. MIPS and SPARC simulators are also included in the GDB
4.17 release.

GDB now understands the DWARF 2 debug information format.

GDB has basic Java language support for native compiled Java.

GDB 4.17 includes two years of bug fixes and updated vendor OS support.
If you are using GCC 2.8 or EGCS 1.x, you should definitely switch over
to GDB 4.17. GDB 4.16 does not handle the debug information output by
these modern GCCs very well.

These are some of the highlights. Please see gdb-4.17/gdb/NEWS for more
specific information about additions to GDB.

There is a web page for GDB at

	http://www.cygnus.com/gdb/

Which includes information about GDB mailing lists (an announcement
mailing list, developers discussion lists, etc.), locations for
development snapshots, preformatted documentation, and links to related
information around the net. We will put errata notes and host-specific
tips for this release on-line as any problems come up. All mailing
lists archives are also browsable via the web.

Many people have contributed to this release, thanks to everybody for
the help!

Keep those fixes and improvements coming in!
(Send them to bug-gdb@gnu.org)

[ Most GNU software is packed using the GNU `gzip' compression program.
Source code is available on most sites distributing GNU software.

For information on how to order GNU software on tape or cd-rom, and
printed GNU manuals, check the file etc/ORDERS in the GNU Emacs
distribution, ftp the file /pub/gnu/GNUinfo/ORDERS on prep, or
  e-mail a request to: gnu@gnu.org

By ordering your GNU software from the FSF, you help us continue to
develop more free software. Media revenues are our primary source of
support. Donations to FSF are deductible on US tax returns.

The above software will soon be at these ftp sites as well.
Please try them before ftp.gnu.org as ftp.gnu.org is very busy!
A possibly more up-to-date list is at URL

* Getting GNU software in Great Britain

jpo@cs.nott.ac.uk is willing to distribute those GNU sources he has
available. The smaller items are available from the info-server (send
to info-server@cs.nott.ac.uk); the larger items by negotiation. Due to
communication costs this service is only available within the UK.

BattenIG@computer-science.birmingham.ac.uk (aka
I.G.Batten@fulcrum.bt.co.uk) is also willing to distribute those GNU
sources he has.

wizards@doc.ic.ac.uk is willing to distribute those GNU sources they have
along with most other freely distributable software. The SunSITE archive
on SunSITE.doc.ic.ac.uk (193.63.255.4) is available via ftp, http, fsp,
gopher, NFS and Lanmanger over IP (SMB), and telnet.

UK sites with just anonymous FTP access are in the above list.

* Getting GNU software via UUCP

OSU is distributing via UUCP: most GNU software, MIT C Scheme,
Compress, News, RN, NNTP, Patch, some Appletalk stuff, some of the
Internet Requests For Comment (RFC) et al.. See their periodic
postings on the Usenet newsgroup comp.sources.d for informational
updates. Current details from <staff@cis.ohio-state.edu> or
<...!osu-cis!staff>.

Information on how to uucp some GNU programs is available via
electronic mail from: uunet!hutch!barber, hqda-ai!merlin, acornrc!bob,
hao!scicom!qetzal!upba!ugn!nepa!denny, ncar!noao!asuvax!hrc!dan,
bigtex!james (aka james@bigtex.cactus.org), oli-stl!root,
src@contrib.de (Germany), toku@dit.co.jp (Japan) and info@ftp.uu.net.

* If You Like The Software

If you like the software developed and distributed by the Free
Software Foundation, please express your satisfaction with a donation.
Your donations will help to support the Foundation and make our future
efforts successful, including a complete development and operating
system, called GNU (Gnu's Not Unix), which will run Unix user
programs. For more information on GNU and the Foundation, contact us
at the above address, or see our web site at http://www.gnu.org.

Ordering a GNU Source Code CD-ROM or Source Code CD-ROM Subscription
is a good way for your organization to help support our work.
