From: Swen Gerber <Swen.Gerber@Informatik.TU-Chemnitz.DE> Subject: ISL encapsulation support (kernelpatch) Date: Wed, 22 Apr 1998 13:43:37 GMT -----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Inter Switch Link (ISL) is used to inter-connect two VLAN capable Ethernet switches using the Ethernet media. ISL protocol is developed by CISCO Systems Inc. If a Linux server should be member in several VLAN's you have to configure the switch port as a Trunk, and connect the server directly to this Trunk. The Trunk is using the ISL protocol, so the Linux server have to implement this protocol. The packets on the ISL link contain a standard Ethernet and the VLAN information associated with that frame. ISL is only supported by Cisco switches (Catalyst5000, ProStack).
