Gilles,

I've been loosely following the exchanges on this topic. Here's my
uneducated summary:

If you want to "play" around with Java as quickly and easily as possible use
the Nikitin port. It works but doesn't appear to be as optimized as the
Byrne port. I'm successfully running Java applications with the Nikitin
port on a RH5 distribution; I haven't tried any applets. (My applications
are small, mostly using the awt and swing 0.7).

If you're doing production work use the Byrne port. But it doesn't work out
of the box yet (Byrne doesn't have an official RH5 glibc port ready yet.
I've seen posts from people who report getting it to work, but it involves
mucking with your shared libraries (glibc, ld.so, and ???). From a Byrne
post a couple of weeks back it appears that there should be a Byrne RH5
(glibc) version coming along relatively soon, so another option is to hold
off for a few weeks.
