Subject: The X11 address book has moved

-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-----
The X11 address book (XAB) has moved. The new location is :
http://www.mindspring.com/~asav/xab.html
What does XAB (and JAB) do ?
- -----------------------
It is an address book (a.k.a. card file) which you can use to store
names, addresses, telephone numbers, email addresses and any other
information you want to store about people with whom you wish to keep in
touch with. The information can be organized into folders, sub-folders
and cards. There is a facility to search and merge the address book
database. The database is stored in a file normally located in the
user's home directory.
XAB is written using X11 APIs (Xaw) and runs on a number of different
operating systems including Linux, Solaris, Digital Unix and SCO
Openserver. (It should build under other UNIX systems as well).
JAB provides the same functionality and more and is written in Java and
therefore should run on non-UNIX systems as well.
Changes since the last announcement
- ----------------------------
I have added the capability to read resources files to the XAB program.
That means that attributes like colors and fonts can be setup using the
app-default file or personal resource files instead of using passing
them from the command-line. A sample app-default file is included which
will get installed when you "make install".
I have added quite a few functionalities to the Java Address Book (JAB)
since the last announcement. Now it is fully functional. The JAB program
can run in 3 modes:
(1) stand-alone : same functionality as XAB, but looks different. It is
used for storing personal information in a local file.
(2) server : In this mode, it listens to requests from client and
provides necessay information that is requested.
(3) client : This looks exactly like the stand-alone mode but instead of
getting the information from the local file, it gets the information
from the server. It does not have any "write" capabilities.
The client-server version can be used by a small company to make
company-wide employee information available to all its desktop users
including the management hierarchy and name, phone numbers and
addresses for all the employees.
Note : The way the data is stored is different for XAB and JAB and are
not compatible.
Please continue to send your feedback to Amit Chatterjee
<asav@mindspring.com>.
Thanks.
