The conference will include sessions for submitted papers on practical and experimental uses of Perl; invited presentations; daily Q and A sessions with leading Perl developers and trainers; a by-invitation Developers Workshop; and nightly user-organized Birds-of-a-Feather sessions for special interest groups. Practical Presentations In the practical spirit of Perl, we seek papers that describe how you are using Perl right now for work or play, and how your experience and your code can help others. This is not a traditional solicitation for academic papers. While we look forward to papers on new and useful extensions, applications, and tools, we are most interested in receiving papers that show Perl hard at work, saving time, money, and headaches for you and your organization. We welcome submissions that work under both Unix and non-Unix systems, such as Win32. Subjects on which we invite papers include but are not limited to: * Automation of core operations of an organization * Creation of dynamic content on the world wide web, and administration of web servers * Database maintenance, usage, and customized reporting * Integration of -- 'glue' for -- incompatible systems * Administration of large networks (100+ computers) * Development of large projects in Perl: practical experience with specific practices and coding standards * Support of software development in other languages * Security and cryptography * Games and diversions * Financial applications * Scientific programming * Graphics What, How, and Where to Submit Authors are invited to submit extended abstracts (3-5 pages or 1500-2500 words) of their work, not including optional figures, references, and code samples. If you choose to send a full paper (not to exceed 20 pages), you must still send an extended abstract. All submissions are held in the highest confidentiality as a matter of policy. In the Perl spirit of mutual cooperation, open solutions with freely redistributable source code are very strongly preferred. If source code for your work cannot be made readily available, please specify so in your submission. Each submission must include: a. The title of the paper b. The names of all authors with their affiliations c. Name and complete contact information for the primary contact (paper mail and email addresses, fax, URL, day and evening phone numbers) d. An extended abstract as detailed above e. A short abstract of the paper (100-200 words) All submissions will be acknowledged upon receipt. You may submit via email, post, or fax. Electronic submissions are strongly preferred. The format of electronic submissions should be plain ASCII, POD, troff with standard or freely-available macros, LaTeX, or HTML. Optional PostScript images may also be included. Proprietary word processor formats should not be used. Extended abstracts should be sent to pc98submissions@perl.org. Email inquiries should be sent to pc98questions@perl.org. Postal and fax submissions should go to: The Perl Institute Attention: Chip Salzenberg 3665 E.
