The test machines were a 486 Dell Latitude LX notebook with 16MB of main memory and an SuperMicro Pentium 200 SCSI tower with 96MB of main memory. Roughly (again, from memory), the time to load StarOffice on the notebook, from invocation to the appearance of the explorer was 2:18 (two minutes, eighteeen seconds). On the Pentium 200 it was roughly 40 seconds. To open a new spreadsheet, from the explorer, took a further 1:10 seconds (one minute, ten seconds) on the Dell and about 11 seconds on the Pentium. StarOffice 4.0, standard install, took about 140MB on both machines. Once loaded, StarOffice took over 32MB of memory with about 5.5MB resident on the Dell. Applix 4.37 on the Dell (haven't done the pentium testing yet) loaded to the button bar in 1:10 (one minute ten seconds). Opening a new spreadsheet document took something like 11 second after that. The memory footprint for Applix was about 24MB with 4MB resident. Applix was SIGNIFICANTLY snappier than SO 4.0 on the notebook. It's also a more stable product. StarOffice, on the other hand, kicks the living shit out of Applix from a features and user interface point of view. Applix loaded in 115MB WITHOUT any Clip Art or online documentation. It threatened to consume 450MB if I loaded all of it. greg
