Subject: Operating system survey - results available
Date: 12 Feb 1998 00:29:12 GMT

The results of my operating system survey for managers and
developers are now available at:

  http://seqaxp.bio.caltech.edu/www/os_survey_results.html

In addition to questions about common operating system features, this survey
also asked specific questions about these operating systems:

AIX, DG/UX, Digital Unix, HP-UX, Irix, Linux, Macintosh, MPE, MVS,
 NetWare, NonStop-UX, OpenVMS, OS/2, OS/400, Solaris, UnixWare, Windows95
 and Windows NT

The usable responses were from:

 All 56
 -------------
 Industry 23
 Academia 18
 Government 5
 Other 10

A pretty good cross section of OS use was obtained, more than you
might expect from the relatively small number of responses, because
many respondents were experienced with many OS's. Even so, some OS's
were underrepresented. There's not much one can do if you build it
and they do not come :-(. Users of DG/UX, MVS, Nonstop-UX, OS/400,
and UnixWare were conspicuously absent, with MPE users turning out
in only slightly greater number.

The raw data, minus the names of the respondents, is available from a
link at the above page. I only calculated medians, means, and
standard deviations, but those of you with a statistics package handy
and some free time may want to take the analysis a bit further.

I thank those of you who took the time to fill out the (long) survey
form, and hope that these results will be of some interest to you.

Regards,
