      To be fair, modversions can be supported if .tmp_versions is copied to the local directory and used instead of the one in the kernel sources.  See this &lt;a href=&quot;http://savannah.nongnu.org/cgi-bin/viewcvs/*checkout*/orinoco/orinoco/Makefile?rev=HEAD&amp;amp;content-type=text/plain&quot;&gt;Makefile&lt;/a&gt; for example.
&lt;p&gt;
That said, changes that simplify external module building would be very welcome.
