Fortunately i am not a user of this, but the development is a sad one. If I understand correctlu, the PWC approach was to hide all the binary stuff (closed) behind an open and maintained layer, so that the usual argument (closed drivers cannot be fixed externally if the mainline kernel development process breaks something by accident) would not appear to hold.
I personally believe that Phillips is paranoid by not making their specs openly accessible, but hey - the guy that has been punished in the process is not Phillips - the pressure was applied against some poor individual instead who tried to do the right thing.
Morale - why weren't the relevant people at Phillips put under pressure, rather than fighting a pointless battle with a maintainer? Just some thoughts, I had nothing to do with the story, and hence not much right to an opinion ...
