Linux may power South Korean schools (News.com)

News.com looks at a proposal to put Linux into South Korean schools. "The project, which would rank as one of the largest Linux installations in the country, aims to link all primary and secondary schools and relevant government departments through a common system known as the National Education Information System."

Hmm. No mention of what hardware they're comparing here, or even which
flavour of Unix(tm).

NEIS was previously built and operated without much problem in the central server way base on Sun Microsystems server(s).
But, there were much resistance to that system regarding security because private information of all of the Korean students is stored in central server which possibly can be penetrated.
So this is 2nd trial to build NEIS which tries to distribute student information on many servers.

I've read an article saying that in Bearing Point's test, Unix give better performance( or response time) under heavy load.
Group server will be used by many schools and massive student data is input in somewhat short time period (usually at the end of term). So for group server, response time under heavy load is very important and Bearing Point was cautious about that.
I guess the Unix used in test could be Solaris because previous NEIS system was base on Sun System.
Anyway, it is important that Linux passed the test and proved itself as stable and secure enough to use in critical goverment use and will be used in major number of NEIS system.
