It's ok, (he says calmly, sitting back in his chair), Microsoft won't be in the OS business (if they're in any business) any later than close of business 2005.

I've been saying that in public places since about 1999, and I see no reason to change now.

Those who follow the thoughts of Saint Stephenson will know exactly why I think so...

Hey wow, you're almost exactly like me!

Since early 1999, I've been predicting that Microsoft stock's all time peak would be in the second half of 1999. It peaked just before Y2K, and hasn't seen levels near that since. :-) And it never will again, that I'm completely convinced of.

Also in 1999 I predicted that by the start of 2005, nearly all commodity software in widespread use (operating systems, office suites, web browsers, etc) would be Open Source. I'm a little less optimistic on that one. It WILL happen of course, but I might have to give it till 2007 or 2008.
