Are AC97 codec's interchangeable?

I'm fighting a client's Compaq R3000T laptop, which has an AD1981 chip, and Suse 9.0.

I've upgraded ALSA to 1.0.5, but there apparently still isn't a driver for that particular sound chip -- or SuSE doesn't realize it. I've been doing this since 0.99pl12f, and I'm still a bit over my head. Pointers from those people who think I'm a dunce would be appreciated.

And yes, I realize this isn't the optimal forum for this, but I've tried half a dozen others, and I'm running out of ideas... I recommended the laptop in question, so my neck's sorta out.

AD1981 and 1985 both work fine. I assume you can build and load the intel8x0 driver. If so,
you probably just need to investigate the hardware and add the correct PCI IDs to intel8x0.c in
the ALSA tree.

Of course you should dump SuSE as soon as possible. Try building your own kernel from official
sources.

I'm otherwise quite pleased with SuSE, actually; I need something in a box for my business client environment.

I had inferred something about the intel connection, but wasn't sure; thanks for the clarification.

[ looks a second time ]

No, it looks like it may not be a simple enumeration thing. I'll slug at
it a bit, but I'll likely have to go join another mailing list. Ah, the
joys of open source. :-)
