Torvalds trademark looms over Australian Linux industry (ZDNet.com.au)

ZDNet Australia covers Linux Australia Inc., a company that has secured Linus Torvalds' support to register the word "Linux" as a trademark with Australia's intellectual property regulator. "The move is designed to prevent local companies attempting to claim the word as their own, but it will also throw open the possibility that local Linux vendors will start paying royalties to trade on the term for the first time."

Note that Linux Australia Inc. *not* a company... it is the wonderful community driven non-profit organisation that runs linux.conf.au, while Linux Australia Pty. Ltd. is a for-profit company attempting to abuse the trademark.

That article is overly hysterical about the problem -- another company trying to register the trademark 'Linux Australia'.

The solution as mentioned in the first article being to register the Linux trademark of behalf of Torvalds.

Torvalds will be the holder of the Linux trademark in Australia at the end.

Surprised we haven't seen an LA Committee member post here yet, but both Anand (akumria) and I are LA admins and ex-Committee, and Jeff (jdub) has come that close to being elected as well.

Yes, the registration is being done through LA for Linus (by iLaw), linux.com.au is essentially a separate issue.

Linux in Australia has begun to seriously catch fire. All kinds of initiatives and government programs have either been announced or are opening their doors. Novell has put a firework under their people and suddenly all manner of peripheral organisations (like booksellers) have popped out of the woodwork with deals for various Linux orgs.

Speaking as a member of the local (Perth, West Oz) Industry Association, we're too busy to scratch.
