Marcelo has announced the availability of
the 2.4.27 kernel. 2.4.27 contains fixes for a handful of security
problems, some new crypto algorithms, a big serial
ATA update, a TCP Vegas and BIC backports from 2.6, and vast numbers of
fixes.

I wonder if I'm the only Linux user who finds the long-form changelog useless. Compare the Linux 2.2 series, who's ChangeLog contains a summary of major changes as well as a detailed list by subject matter, or the early Linux 2.4 series that listed major user-visible changes in plain language.
By comparison, the important user-visible changes to the Marcelo-era kernels are buried in a haystack of "[NET]: Check __dev_get_by_name() return value in eql.c", which is bad enough by itself, but they are also sorted by author instead of subject matter, making them impossible to browse.
I guess the ChangeLog is targetted to developers instead of users nowadays. Users need to rely on sites like LWN and Kernel Traffic to get the skinny on new releases.

You are right, I should make a resume of the most important changes.
On the other hand, with the current changelog scheme, you can see in the detail the changelog entries.

I'll make sure to make a resume of each -pre in a more meaningful way, so I can group that when -final is released.
Note that we should not have many v2.4 release's comming next anyway...

Another thing is, v2.6 should also have a nice resume of the changes, and it
currently doesnt. v2.6 mainline and -mm (which is even more developer targetted changelogs than mainline).

Same here. A summary helps me explain to my bosses why we need this update.
We appreciate your work.

Nice. I for one would appreciate the summaries, since I don't follow the development *that* closely (I'm a sysadmin, not a kernel hacker). Thanks for your work!

I believe the 2.4 changelogs changed when Marcelo switched to using
bitkeeper and the scripts for automatically pulling a changelog out of
that.

Which DVD-RW support? The one reverted in -rc5? I recall a LWN notice about it (the removal) as well, which stated it would be back for 2.4.28...

Um, yeah, that one. I guess I'll take that out of the article...
