Here's some OSCON
coverage from NewsForge. "Talk of a new type of software
development community that spills into more traditional communities such as
towns, churches and country clubs was matched with a new kind of
pick-and-choose, componentized Linux distribution, and renewed efforts to
push Gnome to desktop success at OSCON's second to last day."

Having seen it stated so boldly, I just want to understand, why? Was the user community deemed inadequate for using all the features of 1.4? Is the new target audience inadequate for all the features? Maybe adequacy is not even the issue maybe there is something I'm missing.
Just tell me what is the point for taking this flexible desktop and devolving it into the least common denominatior?

Though it didn't come across clearly in this article, the speaker (oh hey, that's me!) made it very clear during the talk that GNOME was *NOT* aiming at the lowest common denominator - rather, the greatest common factor. That's a very important distinction.

*And* you told them about Coopers. Did Novell really get hold of some in
Oregon? Enough to go around?

Unfortunately, no. Or perhaps that's fortunate. Don't want them bleeding us dry and all. :-)
