Dell Releases New Linux Workstations (Internetnews.com)

Internetnews.com reports that Dell is selling two new 64 bit machines with Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3 installed. "Dell is jumping on Intel's Extended Memory 64-bit Technology (EM64T) bandwagon pretty hard these days, but it is really moving product with the help of Linux. The Round Rock, Texas-based computer maker listed two new workstations at its online store Wednesday. The Dell Precision 470n and 670n workstations run on Intel's latest Xeon Nocona processors with its coordinating Tumwater chipset."

As usual Dell made sure that the Linux workstations are MORE expensive
than there Windows counterparts.... Would be nice if they would start to
ship them with SuSE professional (NOT Enterprise), Debian or Fedora or
ADD_YOUR_FAVORITE_FREE_DISTRO_HERE. But then, they propably pay Microsoft
even for the Linux Computers they ship, and this fact has to be hidden
behind a RedHat subscription :-(

But anyway, this is a start.

Cheers

Not only that, they take the hit of shipping AMD64 late just to keep shipping it only from Intel – under a differente name.

And then, you see MS helping the Intel monopoly by shipping MS W64 late to pair Intel slips, Intel helping the MS monopoly by shipping hardware with little freely available documentation, and Dell helping both… I hope IBM luck with their POP (PowerPC) initiative, but then I’ve been hoping for years now, and the current Pegasos and A1 products aren’t neither compelling nor available for me.
