Has there been any progress doing multiprocessing with two different CPUs, rather than just two duplicate CPUs at different speeds?

I doubt it; it is terminally bonkers.

You mean like a PC with a video card with GPU, sound card with DSP and a floating point unit? As each of these components becomes more complex it will need to start maintaining its own resources just like an OS.

Asymmetric multiprocessing is useful in a number of areas, and I suspect it will become more so in the future.
