Java on eWeek

eWeek covers a JBoss announcement that the JBoss Application Server has passed the compatibility test suite for the Java 2 Enterprise Edition platform Version 1.4.

eWeek interviews Java creator James Gosling. "With NetBeans day occurring at JavaOne this year, I have to ask about Eclipse. Is the possibility of a Sun membership still on the table?
It's sort of hard to imagine us joining. I think that maybe Eclipse should join the NetBeans group.

Eclipse versus NetBeans

I wish Gosling would give it up. NetBeans is harder to use compared to Eclipse, and has a smaller community. Can't he see that Eclipse is the future? Perhaps Gosling and Sun have too much emotional investment in NetBeans.

I think Gosling is right on. Would you suggest Netbeans should cease to exist? A lot of commercial applications are built on top of the netbeans framework, and netbeans itself has a lot of users.

Competition in the IDE marketspace is good for users.

He may be right on about Java tools, but he seems sadly out of touch with respect to other platforms (e.g., It's a tragedy in the Windows world that there is only one developer tool--have we never heard of Cygwin and MinGW32? Even I know about those...).

He had a few other statements that were also a bit jarring, but overall he seemed to hit the mark pretty well.
