Sun may put Java server on open-source table (ZDNet)

ZDNet covers an announcement from Sun Microsystems concerning the possible release of the Java Enterprise System as an open-source project. "The company on Thursday issued a statement saying, "Sun is considering open sourcing Java Enterprise System, but no final decision has been made." A Sun representative attributed the statement to Stephen Borcich, executive director of Sun's Java Enterprise System, and offered no other details. Sun has faced pressure to release the Java language and associated programming software to the open-source community, though it has indicated that it is reluctant to do so. Sun has also said that it will eventually make its Solaris Unix operating system open source, but has not offered details on timing or licensing changes."

Fluff and Misdirection

One thing we don't need is more speculation about what Sun might do someday. We've seen story after story about how they might do this, definitely won't do that, and are thinking about something else. That's not news. It's just PR trying to make it seem as if somebody, somewhere, really wants Java.

When we see an actual legal commitment, that might be news -- if anybody still cares, by then. Of precisely equal interest, will be what they are not committing to ("yet"). It's dollars to donuts they won't, for example, commit to releasing their patents on JVM techniques to the public domain, or to unlimited use in Free Software. Without that, of course, whatever they do release will have negative value for the Free Software community.

The requirement for doing so :

- Use a Free Software license (as qualified by the FSF and the OSI),
- Use a Free Software license compatible with GPL,
- If you have any "software" patent related to that field, put a non-revocable Royalty-Free license for all of them when licensing under a Free Software license.

Is Sun Executive Board reading LWN.net ? I hope so.
