Oracle and Linux win over NZX (New Zealand Herald)

The New Zealand Herald reports that the New Zealand stock exchange has moved to Oracle on Linux. "Apart from being able to consolidate 21 databases into one, the new NZX system runs faster, more reliably and at less cost, says the company's tech team." (Thanks to Kanchana Wickremasinghe)

I really want the Oracle quote to be something like "You get what you pay for. If you want your queries to take 1000 times as long, you'll have to pay a lot more for your database." Of course, Oracle is probably much more expensive by the hour...

Be aware that the standard of IT here is very low. The vast majority of
people are 'cowboys', with some really dodgy deals going on. I would
imagine NZ will be one of the last adopters of linux, not because there is
heaps of money for MS. Perhaps because linux offers a level of
flexibility that is undesirable to vendors hoping to lock customers into
sweet deals? :-(

I'm glad NZSE has gone with linux, and while I question their choice of
Oracle, even going with something other than SQL server is a major
departure in the IT industry here, so you can't expect too much too soon.

Not true in my experience. I've worked in IT in New Zealand for about 7 years, and in various companies in Europe and the US for another 7 years. The New Zealand IT scene is not significantly different from elsewhere.

There are cowboys everywhere.

And everywhere you go you can find managers with a fear of adopting anything that isn't mainstream technology.

Linux is, however, definitely moving into the mainstream at a steady pace here. I have many of New Zealand's largest companies as customers and know that Linux awareness is definitely increasing, and deployments of Red Hat (or even Debian in some cases) are no longer the radical leap they once were.

I think you're wrong about the standard in NZ - of course I would say that, I'm a contractor. But I've worked in Australia, the US and the UK and not seen much difference.

From a customer point of view, a lack of Linux expertise means that they see a Linux solution as providing more lockin to a 3rd party vendor than an MS one. You and I will agree that the technology is more open, but if the customer can't walk away to another integrator/developer to support the system I delivered, they perceive that as lock-in.

I've thought about this for a while - why is MS so dominant in NZ? I think there are three reasons.

1. Solnet treated their customers so shittily for so many years that customers turned away from Solaris in favour of NT. Solaris to Linux is easier than Solaris to Windows.

2. Scale. If I use a 1% market share platform in the US, I still have dozens or hundreds of fellow users. In New Zealand I'm on my own. Therefore, in NZ the dominant player has a much bigger advantage.

3. There never have been many large enterprises in NZ that required mainframe or minicomputer systems. Most IT operations started with Windows and grew up, rather than with IBM iron/VAXen/whatever and growing down. Since people stick with what they know, as Windows users have graduated into the data centre, they've taken Windows with them.

I too think NZ will be among the last to adopt Linux heavily. But that's fine by me, I'll be ready when it happens.

Eep. Re Solaris, what I'm trying to say is that Unix never got the same traction here that it did in other countries.

Thank you for your insightful comment, you raised several things I hadn't
thought of before (esp. viewing linux as lock in!). I haven't seen the
relative usage of solaris elsewhere, but you do certainly see it around.
E.g. I noticed when I bought some plumbing the other day that the POS
system was running on solaris.

You are certainly right about people going up rather than down. I often
wonder why the polytechs, and especially the small PTEs don't take the
lead and teach how to perform basic computer use, and perhaps admin, on
Linux. Given how low profit margin some small businesses are, I would
have though that having an someone who knew Linux on staff would save an
appreciable chunk of money.

I really like this one.

"Linux in effect gives Oracle its own stripped-down operating system, one it doesn't have to pay for and which leaves customers with more money to pay for Oracle software"

So instead of paying MS-tax we start paying Oracle-tax.

Gerrard.

Tsk. Tsk. One step at a time - you can't have everything from day 0.
