Well, the name may mean monkey in Spanish, but in the US it is slang for a disease. Time will tell which is more accurate.

If folks will accustom themselves to pronouncing it like its Spanish pronunciation, the mononucleosis jokes will hopefully subside. It is MOH-noh (or MOE-noe, if you can't seem to avoid using dipthongs), not MAW-noe.

And in Finland it is a common colloquial term for a shoe (originally derives
from a certain brand of ski shoes).
A funny word, having a different meaning in so many languages.

Really nice to see GNU Classpath and Eclipse support (as shown prominently in the screenshots!) through the IKVM runtime.
Shows how flexible and innovative Free Software can be!
This should give some healthy competition for Kaffe OpenVM and the GNU Compiler for Java gcj.
Still waiting for the C# frontend for GCC to complete the picture.

That's the Mono Monkey. Rupert (monkey) is the mascot of Ximian (rhymes with simian - get it?) and 'mono' means monkey in Spanish.

I believe it says "Mono 1.0". The name of the file (mono1.gif) also suggests this.
Thanks to everyone who made this release possible!
Congrats to the developers!

A few suggestions along the way;
I think mono has to get rid of what I would call its identity crisis.
Is it a .net clone? Is it a gnome development platform? Or both?
The problem with being both, is that it prevents it from being fully accepted by the rest of the linux community. There's wide range perception that mono is a .net clone and a lot of people just diregards mono because of that.
It would be very beneficial to separate out the .net compatible class library into a separate project, with a separate name and release cycles.
Congrats to the developers!

Straight from the first rows of the home page:
"""What is Mono?
Mono is a comprehensive open source development platform based on the .NET framework that allows IT and ISV developers to build Linux and cross-platform applications with unprecedented productivity."""
