Hmm, I guess my custom PostScript program for printing my return address
labels is nearly obsolete now.

I have one of those, too! Take solace in knowing that ours are surely more compact postscript. :)

Likewise my pile of shell script and TeX for printing CD labels.

(Does anyone not. have one of these? :) )

There are not. It is GUI tools that are obsolete.
