Lindows offers 'Desktop Comparison Kit'

Lindows, Inc. has announced the availability of a "Desktop Linux Comparison Kit," being a single boxed set containing Linspire 4.5, Fedora Core 2, and Mandrakelinux 10.0 Community Edition. "Businesses, educational institutions and computer enthusiasts will find this Kit valuable in determining the best solution for their needs. Besides 4 gigabytes of software, a handy checklist is included to help evaluate the products on ease of installation and use, media playback, plug & play hardware device detection, virus checking and more." Past experience suggests that the checklist may not be the most objective work one could imagine (see also the choices of screenshots on "linuxshootout.com"), but it's hard to argue with a box containing the actual distributions.

Donning my tinfoil hat, I have to wonder whether FC2 has the patched installer or not. Since many people who would buy this comparison kit likely have Windows installations that they'd like to continue using, if only for a little while, what will they think of FC2 if it screws up their ability to boot into Windows?

On a less conspiratorial note, I see that they include things in their checklist that aren't by default included in most distros, such as Flash support. Further, their assertion that "digital camera" "plug and play" support is missing in FC2 doesn't say what they _mean_ by "digital camera". I've never had a problem seeing my digital camera in RH7.3 -- it just worked (it was minimal extra work in Debian), and I suspect gqview would work just fine with it.

Oh, and they fill in the checklist for you, to save you the trouble, though there's a blank version that you can print for yourself.

Oh, this just *so* fair. Let's play comparing apples to oranges: the full commercial version of Lindows (at, admittedly, a slight discount from the normal boxed set price) to Red Hat's permanent-beta version and Mandrake's free release. Yep, that sounds fair... at least compared to, say, Ken Brown's head-up-my-ass writings.

I would like to suggest that Mandrake and everyone else should immediately add a sticker to their packages, pointing out that they include, at no additional charge, complete copies of Lindows' free release. Purely in the spirit of leveling the playing field, of course. <grin>

I agree about Mandrake, but I don't think the comparison
to "Red Hat's permanent-beta" is particularly unfair since
Red Hat don't sell anything in the same price range as
Lindows. If you're looking to pay less than several hundred
dollars FC is the only thing on offer from RH. So depending
who you think the target audience for the kit is, this may
be a fair enough comparison.

Unless I've badly misunderstood their pricing
info, none of those options are really comparable to
Lindows. I still claim that for a home user at least,
the only Redhat currently available is Fedora.

and Mandrake's free release

Not only that, but the "Community" version of said release, which is specifically *not* targeted at newbies. The "official" release has been available for quite some time now (released just after FC2), so they have no excuse.

actually I think that offering this would be a great idea. CD's of the free distros routinly sell for $5 retail so for a couple bucks less profit when you buy a ~$70-100 retail package you would not only get your chosen distro but samples of the competition, just more evidence that you really believe you are selling the best distro, you aren't afraid of your users seeing the competition :-)

now there is potential here for dirty tricks, but I expect that the bad press involved for getting caught playing the dirty tricks would be serious enough to doscourage them

Lindows offers 'typical marketing techniques'

>Oh, this just *so* fair.<

Yeah, this is typical marketing. It promotes Linspire as an easy to use home OS, while infering that Mandrake and Fedora are for "engineers and developers".
The screenshots are blatent. The Linspire shot is colorful and has a picture of a family on vacation. (Geez, maybe Linspire is fun and easy to use?) While the Mandrake and Fedora shots show their welcome screens and are devoid of color. (and smiling faces) They even go so far as to reduce the Fedora shot in size to further detract from it's "unique interface".

Yep, typical marketing.
