A screenshot that illustrates the support for color terminal can be found at:

It shows the colors used for syntax highlighting for an X11 Emacs "frame",
and Emacs frames running on a 256 and 8 color rxvts, black on white and
white on black. This shows that there won't be much difference between the appearance of text in Emacs when running on X11 and a 256-color terminal.
