IBM's Linux Push (IT-Director)
IT-Director takes a
look at IBM's role in Linux adoption. "According to Adam
Jollins, who is part of IBM's Linux Marketing Strategy team, the adoption
of Linux is happening most quickly in Banking, Government and Retail,
followed by sectors that use scientific or engineering applications
(automotive, pharmaceuticals, life sciences, education etc.) This is
unusual in some respects as the Banking industry is normally and early
adopter of technology whereas Government is normally a late adopter, but
these two sectors appear to be driving Linux adoption along with
Retail."

First of all, doesn't IT-Director have anyone who can proofread this stuff? "...normally and early adopter..." should read "...normally an early adopter..." But more worrisome is the inherent illogic of the statement: if Banking is normally an early adopter of technology, why include it? The author should have focused on the Government sector, which (according to him) is the one that is not running true-to-form. Yes, I know Emerson's statement that "A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of small minds"; nevertheless, people who make corporate money decisions read articles in publications like IT-Director, and lack of consistency is what makes them (as well as the rest of us) take otherwise good information with more than the proverbial "grain of salt".

Posted May 31, 2004 17:52 UTC (Mon) by Odysseus (guest, #11518) [Link] Scientific and enginerring are Linux late adopters?>> Maybe he just came into the industry & is looking at "new adoption" numbers, and the "new adopter" numbers are low for scientific & engineering because the scientists & engineers all adopted 5 to 8 years ago & there are no "new adopters" in this group.
