SCO in the SD Times 100

The SCO Group has sent out a press release proclaiming its being named in the "SD Times 100." ""SCO is honored to be named among the many influential companies that comprise the SD Times 100. We pride ourselves in the work we do to create world renowned Unix-based solutions designed by some of the most experienced and outstanding engineers in the industry." For the curious, here is the SD Times 100; SCO appears under "Influencers" in the company of Apache, Eclipse, O'Reilly, OSDL, and the W3C; the entry reads "The company's legal assaults on IBM and Linux users dominated 2003's tech headlines and shook up the open-source community. No other IT topic inspires such fervent debate, fear, uncertainty and doubt." Honored, indeed.

I've just sent a (polite) email of protest about this to the feedback address on the article, and I hope others will too - it's outrageous that SCO should be honoured for its shenanigans.

It sounds to me that SCO isn't being honored, it is being mocked.

"No other IT topic inspires such fervent debate, fear, uncertainty and doubt."

Mocking indeed.

It is funny they are so stupid they feel "honored"

Yet, the main title of the page reads "The Best of the Best", so I'd expect an unaware (not necessarily an inattentive one) reader would indeed consider this a honor.

Exactly - and of course, SCO has put out a positive press release. Any mocking of SCO should be sufficiently clear that they can't twist things to look positive. Calling SCO an influencer is like calling the Black Death a force for health improvement.

No, it's not the same. It's like saying the Black Death was a significant event in the history of public health.

They said "Influencers", they didn't say positive influence or negative influence.

For the first time, SCO has been honest about itself. We should applaud them.

Hmm, they of course couldn't stop lying in their press release:
"SCO was recognized for its influence in software development as owners of the UNIX Operating System."
Whereas, the SD Times says "The company’s legal assaults on IBM and Linux users dominated 2003’s tech headlines and shook up the open-source community. No other IT topic inspires such fervent debate, fear, uncertainty and doubt."

"SCO was recognized for its influence in software development..." in much the same way as the HIV virus has been recognized for its influence on modern society...
