We often had to resort to tools like the LaTeX picture mode to create drawings in digital form.Don't write off TeX completely; there are much better tools than LaTex picture mode now. See, e.g., "The LaTeX Graphics Companion" for some nifty tools for making these sorts of diagrams.

XY-PIC, in particular, is an astonishingly capable tool...... with a syntax that looks more like line noise than that of any other tool I've ever heard of. This detracts considerably from its usefulness. :(
