In today's entry, there's some comments from Jon Smirl about how OpenGL should be used for much more than it is right now (in fact, for most everything) because of its speed when coupled with the 3D hardware in modern video cards.
I just got to wondering--doesn't Microsoft have some sort of ownership over OpenGL (since SGI sold them some stuff a while back)? And isn't this exactly the kind of thing they'd love to use to strangle the 'free desktop' if they had the slightest chance? Heavy dependence on something owned by someone determined to do you in doesn't seem like the wisest path to take...

I dont have a URL to show (erased it!),... but it seems that M$ "only" has a couple of patents over the Shader Engine,... i belive easly overcomed by compiler technologie... so IMO there is nothing that prevents a super ALGA(really Advanced Linux Graphics Arquitecture)...
SGI has some sugestions http://oss.sgi.com/projects/performer/
