OSNews presents a
wishlist for GNOME 3.0. "Gnome needs an integrated (with
Nautilus, Evolution and other apps) multi-protocol instant messaging
application. It needs to be doing Jabber, AIM/iChat/ICQ, MSN, Y! and maybe
IRC (X-Chat will always be available as a third party app to fill up any
IRC voids). More over, the application will need to support video and audio
conferencing for the above protocols." (Found on Footnotes)

As a journalist, he's free to wish whatever he wants.
Agree with you for developers, or wannabe-developers, but the effect of what you say is that everyone should be a coder.
Which does not do.
We also need journalists, and testers, and human interface people (, and your normal "stupid" user), who can comment on what is being done.
No demands without money or work, nor any power to decide. But as long as others are free to ignore you, you can wish as much as you want.

It's actually "she" not "he".

I wonder if you read the article at all. The links to the code are provided for every item. Of course, more work would be needed for GNOME integration. Disclaimer: this is not Slashdot, and I'm not new here.

One of the "minor" points noted in the article is a lack of a gnome modem-dialler app. This has puzzled me for a long while. How exactly are gnome users supposed to connect to the internet? For example, all those Sun "java desktop" systems that are available from Wal-Mart are presumably gnome systems and are definitely not going to be on ISDN connections.
I use gnome, but install the whole of kde too, just to get kppp! (yes, I probably could use wvdial from the commandline).
Modem dialer good, but color chooser essential, here.

I'm a KDE (and broadband) user, but I too have wondered where the modem dialer is.
While we are at it, and still in the "basics" department, where's the widget color chooser applet (the parallel to kcmshell colors)? In another thread, someone asked why I'm worried about color when the apps aren't all there. It's simple. I look at the color all day every day, in every (environment inclusive) app I use, so it's not like it's just one piece of one app I can tolerate not fitting my taste. Even MS has an APPEARANCE editor, where one can choose colors for the GUI interface as they see fit. Open source is supposed to be MORE customizable, not LESS, and come on! editing (poorly documented) text config files by hand to change the color of the GUI has GOT to be a joke! The only folks I can imagine being comfortable with that are going to be using the command line most of the time anyway, not a GUI. Neither does a theme swapper do the job, as I've yet to find a theme that gets every aspect "right" for me, and a single bad color choice ruins the whole theme, from my perspective.
Unless and until Gnome gets serious about things and provides even a simple thing like a GUI color configurator, I simply cannot take it seriously as an operating environment. I REALLY wish it would, because we all know that competition is good for all parties, and while KDE is doing well, a little bit of a push from serious competition could only make it do better. Unfortunately, something that won't even let me adjust the colors I have to stare at all day simply isn't serious competition, IMO.
Oh, well. It does seem Gnome is more appealing to the corporate types favoring desktop lockdown anyway, and a simple thing like a color chooser would only be one more thing they had to deactivate to achieve their goal. That probably explains the lack of a modem dialer as well, if it's big corporate interests with a deployed network calling the shots. Still, one would THINK such corporate interests might have road-warriors with laptops that sometimes lodge in hotels without wireless internet access. <shrug>
They have all these fancy apps, but where are the basics? I'd consider both a modem dialer and a color customizer applet essential basics, here, even if I DON'T tend to use dialup modems personally. A desktop environment well into its second generation and now debating its third, shouldn't still be lacking such basics, IMO. If it is, has to be regarded as less than a serious contender, which is, as I said, unfortunate..

modem lights on Fedora is what I use.
There is a preference to set the ifup and down commands
Should be a little more integrated with the network config stuff, but it works

The only reason that GNOME will move to 3.0 is to break API and ABI compatability which are guaranteed between all of the 2.x releases. There has been zero discussion by any developers about making this move. The current plans are for 2.8 in about 6 months, and then 2.10, and possibly 2.12 etc etc.
None of the items on this list require breaking API/ABI compatability, so there is no reason that they could not go into a future 2.x release, if someone is interested enough to write the code...
