Linux to work for welfare (News.com.au)

News.com.au has a report about Centrelink, the Australian welfare agency, which is looking hard at Linux. "Among various projects, Centrelink was investigating the performance potential for Linux as a platform for the 400-odd servers delivering its collaboration software, Lotus Notes. Those servers presently run on Microsoft Windows server platform."

... and on the other hand:

Researcher lists areas where open source fails (Sydney Morning Herald)

A Canadian researcher has drafted a paper about five areas where open source software often falls flat on its face - user-interface design, documentation, feature-centric development, programming for the self and religious blindness.

Really? She for real?
She states...
"I suspect that there isn’t one single reason for the poor quality of user interfaces, but here are some explanations I’ve heard roaming the Open Source circles: geeks value integrity over beauty; the gender gap in Open Source communities; it’s intuitive to the programmers so why would they fix it? (see Programming for the Self), the belief that a pretty user interface can always be designed later once they’re done the real work, the belief that user interface design isn’t real work, and several others."

uh.... OK, OK - full money back guarantee for every "non-pretty" user interface. Really not sure which planet she's from....
AND geek? I always thought of myself more of a nerd :)

"However, if the Open Source community wishes to truly prosper and have their tools used by the general public ...." - prosper? How long has it been now..... And what is Sun doing if not 'prospering' again from open-source technology.

This from the article about her report: "the gender gap within open source communities"
What does this have to do with anything? I'm sick of these "do-gooders" setting up support lines, and the like, for women in IT! I'm NOT disabled, and not caring about so-called gap (of which I'm yet to experience, apparently?). (I'm female BTW)

I'm actually slightly glad she had some 'un-pleasing' experiences, one less to worry about. And this was only *some* of the points I could have pulled out!

Thanks for the heads-up to the First Monday article which BTW is at
http://firstmonday.org/issues/issue9_4/levesque/index.html . Overall, a balanced and relevant article which deserves its own LWN entry and debate - what do you think, Mr Corbet?
