If there is a source format for the former then it would be exactly the
same -- except much easier to fix. I thought the kernel developers had
decided on an interface to load binary-only firmware from userspace (and
before you say that is impossible it could include initial RAM images or
the new cpio stuff). That way there is a clear separation of the works.
No worries about derivatives (in either direction) and cleaner kernel
code to boot.
