China targets Windows with Linux-based OS (Register)
The Register looks at Linux
in China. "In last month's report on a Chinese effort to build
a home-grown Win98, we appealed for further enlightenment on the nature
of the project. Well, it's taken a while, but a kindly Chinese speaker
has done some digging, and reveals it's Linux-based, and GPLed."

Mainland China and Taiwan work on the project together. When the code is open, the governments don't have to fear of backdoors installed by their political opponents - it's much easier to audit open source. Thus Linux contributes to the peace in the region.
China targets Windows with Linux-based OS (Register) Posted Aug 20, 2002 7:32 UTC (Tue) by beejaybee (guest, #1581) [Link] Hmmm...Maybe governments don't have to fear backdoors installed by their political opponents - but do the oppressed people in some parts of the Greater Chinese Empire have something to worry about with respect to backdoors installed by the (one-party) government with the intention of targetting their political opponents? What's wrong with the linux distributions we use in the "free world"?
