MS yanks free Web TTFs (Register)

Microsoft has ended free downloads of their TrueType fonts for the Web, reports this Register article. "Ultimately, this is probably all for the best. While it's undoubtedly irritating to see a much-appreciated resource coldly and suddenly withdrawn by the Beast merely to make alternatives to its licensing extortion less attractive, it's high time that the open-source community got serious about developing some really handsome fonts."

The fonts are are still available at http://corefonts.sourceforge.net/. You can even make an rpm package from them to facilitate installation and deinstallation.

That being said, free (as in speech) fonts are really needed. The problem is that a good font is a work of art, and there are not many artists around who would spend months working on a fonts for free. I just hope that the idea of free software will become more popular among those who can make fonts of professional quality.

In the meantime, maybe some company could sponsor font developers?

Thankfully the same is true of .deb's as well. Simply download all the .exe files from the sourceforge project files listing into a temporary directory (though, given the volatility of these files, you may want to keep them around), and then when you install the "msttcorefonts" package, simply point it to that temp directory where you downloaded the files, and it should go off without a hitch. Note that it won't work unless you download _all_ of the fonts (or, rather, my missing one of the font files caused the preinstall script to think I was mistaken in pointing to that directory).

But yes, we do need some nice "free" fonts out there as well. Hopefully the development of a few original ones will allow others to create derivative ones more simply. In the meantime, however, I'm thankful that the link in the reply above works :)

Someone please suggest a solution to the problem of which the following is but
an instance: I'm sending my resume around, but if I use non-MS or non-Adobe
fonts, the rendering by MS makes my resume look close to illegible on anything
short of a 300dpi printer. Thank you to the LyX people for the ``pslatex''
font button! But that's not a free font, is it?
