Ellison seeks open-source unity (News.com)

News.com covers Oracle CEO Larry Ellison's LinuxWorld keynote. ""We are moving very aggressively, not just to jump on the Linux hype bandwagon, but we're using Linux to run our own business," Ellison said. "We're encouraging our customers to pick Linux because it's cheaper and fasterÂ…and more reliable than any other environment around."" Ellison also stated that the lack of an office suite that is equivalent to Microsoft Office is holding Linux back.

Desktop suite of Linux: put your money....

I do agree with Mr. Ellison that a solid desktop suite would be great for Linux growth.

So - why doesn't he take 10 of his hotshot programmers and put them on the Open Office project for a year pro bono? Make it a rotating position: no promotion to double-senior developer until you have worked on the Open Office team.

Somehow, I doubt that will happen, even though Oracle will never have a competitive suite product (re: Novell and WordPerfect).
