         Welcome to the Conectiva Linux 10 Beta 2


NOTICE: BEING A TEST PRODUCT, THIS IS NOT FOR PRODUCTION USE. 
PLEASE DO NOT INSTALL IT IN MACHINES WITH IMPORTANT DATA.


As you may have imagined, this release contains a snapshot of
the development branch of Conectiva Linux for those who want to
evaluate the current status of the distribution and contribute
providing feedback information to the development team.

Note that the Snapshot contains up-to-date, experimental and
untested packages that are not recommended for production systems,
including the newest 2.6 kernel.

Should any problems occur, please report them to

IMPORTANT CHANGES SINCE BETA 1
------------------------------

- Kernel 2.6.4
- Added BootSplash support built in the kernel
- kde 3.2.1 plus fixes from 3.2 tree
- Added supermount as default in fstab
- Several fixes in kde to deal with
  supermount, which seems much stable now.
- Gnome has been updated to a new development
  version, towards 2.6 stable
- The system tries to configure automatically
  PCI sound boards, at first boot
- Several missing packages have been added to CDs,
  aproaching final layout.
- new ksynaptic, a kde based interface to apt.
- Installer specific changes:
  - using libparted 1.6
  - added support for xfs and jfs filesystems
  - lvm2 support enabled
  - pcmcia enabled
  - several bugs killed
- OpenOffice.org 1.1.1rc1 with Brazilian
  Portuguese help integrated (still under
  revision).
  

ITEMS STILL IN DEVELOPMENT
--------------------------

- the main focus of this release is kernel 2.6 and its
interaction with other components, like installer and the 
hardware detection subsystem.

- the option to upgrade an installed system via installer is
now enabled, but in experimental status.

- some hardwares are not yet supported by 2.6 kernel, as its
drivers are being ported from 2.4

- The standard profile requires just first CD, but other profiles
will require more than one CD to install, like server ones. 

- Bootsplash is still under development, and in the next
releases some user tool will be added.


BOOT IMAGES
-----------

About the bootdisk images. The images were divided in one boot image and
initrd's images (necessary environment for the installer). The initrd image
must be used according to your selected installation:

network.img - used for NFS installation
cdrom.img   - used for local cdrom installation (when the cdrom can't boot)
