For purely image viewing, I recommend qiv.

I agree. qiv stands for quick image viewer,
and that's what it is. It is very small, very
fast, just a viewer, not an editor. It does
not create .qivrc or something in your home dir
and it does not generate thumbnails like ee.

qiv also scales images very crappily, IIRC.
