 Hi all,

I'd just like to mention (and more than that like
you to mention on lwn.net) that the "wxWindows" library
has been renamed "wxWidgets" because of the similarity
of the name to a certain known product from a US
based software company. There has been far more than
enough discussions about how to handle this issue
and we hope to have made the right decision.

Read more about it at:

Regards,

  Robert

Jeez ... next is renaming X Windows :> (Yes I know it's really the X Window System). Maybe they should have just renamed it to wxWindow.

Yeah, I think it sucks too. Those square things on your screen: they are windows, right? Any other reasonable term for them? And Microsoft didn't invent that term. Sigh.

The Mandrake issue is different. Because Mandrake emphasised the "magic" as part of its logo (wands, trails of stars, etc.) it is clear that they were referring to the Mandrake-the-magician cartoons. However I still think it's short-sighted of the Mandrake-the-magician trademark owners to sue. It was free advertising for them, without infringing on their use in any way. And geeks are well known as cartoon consumers too :-). As someone on Slashdot suggested, they should have just bought an ad on the install screens.

It was by no means clear to a lot of people that the name was taken from the cartoon. Mandrakes have been reputed to have magical properties for thousands of years, see Wikipedia.

No kidding. For more on Mandrakes' powerful magic, see Genesis. (Hint: better than dinner and a movie.)

You should send this link to the Mandrake people.

I also believe there should be a revolution in this world against "business men." In particular, I would like to see a change whereby they are discouraged from trying to own everything under the Sun (hint: the Sun is the correct way to describe the star in the middle of the Solar System. I couldn't give a rat's a** if it's some little businee guy's trademark; if the Sun decided to get pissy today, none of us would be here tomorrow. Think about it.)

You mean a revolution of the workers against the oppressive capitalists? ;-)

Well, that's what all of us pinko Linux freaks are all about anyway, isn't it?

Joke, people. HHOS.

Personally, ccchips, I agree. The problem is all about the marketing of it. ;-)

as for the Mandrake issue, it isn't actually a big deal.
The case is going on for years already , I believe, and can go on for another 3 year before it come to the court.

If the issue is the picture only, they should add NOW another picture to it .
I don't care about the picture.( Make it a Sea lion with a teachers stick ).
People get used to that in 3 months time.

If the issue is the name Mandrake, then the company should add another name to mandrake for a year or 2 ( something like Mandrake and Goliath ) and if the win the case, dorp the Goliath, or if they loose the case, drop the Mandrake.

I bet you my ass that nobody will ge tlost by then.

Ofcourse, if you like legal disputes, ignore the above.

Hey guys, look at it in a positive light: in the not too distant future MS will have to rename their product to 'MS Widgets' ;-)

When is this going to stop? Are we still allowed to refer to word processors, or does Microsoft Word prevent that?

Since it was MS that approached them, it is obvious that MS means to have a worldwide trademark on the term "windows" when used with respect to software. They will ask, chide, bully, and sue to get this. Remember that a few years ago a top executive of MS (I think Steve B.) said something to the effect that they only wanted their fair share of the software market - 100%. This is one of their stepping stones on that path.

It won't stop until someone stands up to them instead of caving in.

Ah well, at least the various wrappers can maintain their names - i.e., WxRuby.

Global Replace?

Looks like they did a global replace of "wxWindows" with "wxWidgets" on
the web site, which makes no sense when talking about things that
happened before the name change.
