It seems to me that now more or less every IT company except MS pushes linux, now even Windriver, one which sells an OS itself.

Wind River is a strange case. Some years ago they acquired BSDi, who had not long earlier acquired Walnut Creek, distributors of Slackware and FreeBSD and employers of several developers of both. So Wind River effectively had its fingers in three new OS's at once: BSD/OS, FreeBSD, Slackware. They decided they didn't want Slackware and let those developers go. A year or two later it was clear they didn't want FreeBSD either, and they let them go too. They still list BSD/OS among their products but it's clear they're not too keen on it. And now they want to mess with Red Hat? Well, it's between them and RH, but I don't expect any great contributions to free software from them.

I don't expect ANY contributions to free software from Wind River. They are just running scared. Linux is eating away at the market for their pride and joy (vxWorks). Rightly so, while vxWorks is a decent RTOS (if a bit bloated), its network stack and file system support is no where near Linux in terms of performance. So, they attempt to get into the Linux game. I think they'll discover that they have very little to contribute there.

Well, but now they can ship a complete solution, a high-quality rtos together with a well-integrated development platform. Last week I visited the "embedded world" fair in Nuernberg, and in more than 1/2 of *all* booths there was also a box running linux. Except the guys who want to sell their own OS (MS, QNX and some smaller shops). It really gave me the impression that linux has finally really arrived.
