What's Cookin' at MandrakeSoft?
----------------------------------------
Major changes in MandrakeSoft's Development Process.
MandrakeSoft announced a major change in the way that future Mandrake
Linux distributions will be engineered and released. Beginning with
Mandrake Linux 10.0, MandrakeSoft will release 2 lines of products:
The 'Community' release will be ideal for those who want the 'latest
and greatest' features as soon as possible, while the 'Official'
release is better suited for people who prefer to wait and avoid any
potential unresolved issues. Read the details in the official
announcement:

Financial Corner
----------------------------------------
MandrakeSoft reports first profitable quarter since 1999.
Good news from the financial front. During the latest fiscal quarter
ending December 2003, MandrakeSoft recorded a net profit for the first
time since 1999 -- earning approximately 300,000 euros on quarterly
revenues of 1.4 million euros (approx. $1.7 million US). Please see the
latest Shareholder Newsletter for details:

Mandrake in the News

MandrakeSoft's François Bancilhon was interviewed last month at

OfB.biz -- Shuttling Along: A Second Look at the SB62G2.
The second part of a review of Shuttle XPC SB62G2, a system that OfB.biz
named 'Product of the Year' for 2003:
"Mandrake Linux, as we stated in the first article, is included with the
SB62G2. It worked very well in our tests and, like the Discovery
Edition, provided a streamlined installer, task-oriented menu structure
and pre-installed Macromedia Flash. [...] Shuttle's XPC offers a great
blend of price, performance and compactness that makes it an ideal
workhorse, whatever your needs may be."

Sudhian.com -- Shuttle SB62G2 and Mandrake Linux - A Marriage Made In
Heaven?
Sudhian Media reviews the Shuttle SB62G2 with Mandrake 9.2 Discovery:
"The combination of the SB62G2 and Mandrake Linux offers rock-solid
reliability and a server or office desktop solution whose price is hard
to beat. (...) At last there is a realistic alternative to the beige
box and Windows - and we encourage you to try it. For this reason, we
award the SB62G2/Mandrake combination our SSFTech Recommend Product
award."

OSnews.com -- The MandrakeMove Experience.
OSnews provides a two page review of 'MandrakeMove' -- MandrakeSoft's
Live CD distribution:
"MandrakeMove is a worthwhile product and by far the best in its class
when it comes to ease of use, integration and overall polish. [..] I
think this is a great Move for Mandrake, it is a good promotion for
Mandrake because many Windows converts will be first introduced to
Mandrake and as we all know, the first Linux distribution you try is an
important factor in determining the one you will stay with."

MandrakeClub

Due to numerous requests from Club members, MandrakeSoft has released
special ISO images of Mandrake Linux 9.2 -- with all official updates
-- for Club members only. We've also added some packages built for the
Club such as Gaim 0.74 (which now supports Yahoo messenger), the latest
Mozilla 1.5, and a new OpenOffice with additional patches and

'BizCase' of the Week
----------------------------------------
Sports/Recreation: File Server For Bowling Centers.
Vantage Bowling Corporation is a U.S. company that sells scoring systems
to bowling centers. They have successfully tested Mandrake 9.2 as a
Samba server to get them around the 10 concurrent connection limitation
of MS Windows XP Pro:
"We plan to implement this solution this summer. Using our existing lane
server PC chassis and Mandrake Linux, our cost will be about half that
of a Network Appliance solution, and about a quarter that of
implementing Windows 2003 server."

Software Spotlight
----------------------------------------
"Enjoying NASA's Maestro on your Linux desktop."
Joe Barr downloads and install 'Maestro', the software that NASA uses to
control the Mars rover Spirit, on his Mandrake 9.2 system:
"Here's how easy it was to install and begin using on Linux. First of
all, don't even begin unless you have the Java runtime on your system.
On my Mandrake 9.2 desktop, JRE 1.4.2_01 was already in place. Your
mileage may vary depending on the flavor of Linux you're running.
Here's one place you can get the Java runtime environment (JRE) if you
don't already have it installed..."

They could still be Mandrake Linux. They could have a picture of a mandrake root as their logo, with some joke about "going root" or something. Or not. I suck at coming up with logos.

Whatever happened to their AMD64 version?

Posted Feb 24, 2004 8:09 UTC (Tue) by Duncan (guest, #6647) [Link]

Still no RC or beta for Mdk 10 for AMD64, and many of the updates,
particularly KDE 3.2, aren't even ported yet (many say because the Mdk lead
KDE developer is basically ignoring AMD64.

Nothing of note on club for AMD64 either.. that I've read. Looks like I was
wise not to spend my $$ on it... I still have $120 sitting here for a purchase if
they ever get something for the AMD64 individual desktop.. <shrug>
Guess I need to investigate Gentoo more seriously..
