FOSDEM 2004
The 2004 edition of the Free and Open Source
Developers Meeting will be happening on February 21 and 22 in
Brussels.
LWN editor Jonathan Corbet will be there. In a moment of weakness last
month (he blames Australian wine), he agreed to give two different talks at
the event. Happily, FOSDEM has three tracks this year, so it should be
possible to avoid those talks and see something interesting. The schedule has the
details. Keynote speakers include Tim O'Reilly, Richard Stallman, and, of
course, Jon 'maddog' Hall. FOSDEM looks to be an interesting event.
For the first time, LWN is happy to be sponsoring this event. With luck, this sponsorship will allow us to help a community event while simultaneously bringing in more subscribers. If things work out, we'll be sponsoring more events in the future. Meanwhile, we're looking forward to meeting some of our European readers; see you there. (Log in to post comments)
Virtual Attendance at FOSDEM 2004 with Jabber Posted Feb 20, 2004 9:30 UTC (Fri) by JLCdjinn (subscriber, #1905) [Link] I love the exposure to new information that I have been able to consistently obtain through LWN. This time it came from following the recent announcement that new FOSDEM interviews were available that led me to explore what FOSDEM has been/will be about. I would love to be able to attend, and I discovered that I will, in a way - through Jabber. This year, FOSDEM is encouraging virtual attendance through the use of a Jabber server with group chat rooms set up to correspond to the actual conference premises. Or at least, that's the plan as I gather it. They have some exciting goals, and demand will only fuel their success. I've been wanting to explore Jabber technology ever since I began to read about it; if you're like me, then this might be a great opportunity. Some of the FOSDEM staff hanging out in their virtual Jabber community have lamented the lack of publicity for this option, and so I wanted to expose it as best as I could here. True, FOSDEM starts very soon. But I still would like to get a chance to talk to you in one form or another at the conference! · John ⇔ law@jabber.fosdem.org
